The first ever branch beekeeping course was held over the weekend of 25th and 26th April 2009 at Phytobotanica, Rainford. The event was a huge success, attended by 32 potential new beekeepers.

The course was expertly run by Barbara Roderick, a beekeeper of 20+ years, and assisted by branch members. Barbara is President of the Lancashire & North West Beekeepers Association, and also Education Officer.

During the course, many aspects of beekeeping were covered, including how to identify different bees, hives and hive components; queens, drones and workers; the beekeeping year; swarm control; pests and diseases; honey and other products of the hive. The event rounded of with the opening of a hive, and the opportunity for close inspection of the colony and it's contents.

The Phytobotanica team served up an excellent buffet in the rustic setting of their 'distillery'.

We are hoping to repeat the course in 2010, check the website for dates regularly, as demand is expected to be high and places will be limited!
